How do we make sense of all the cultural change occurring in our society and how should we respond as Christians? Our society’s values and beliefs are shifting away from God’s holy character. Fortunately, there is nothing new under the sun. Psalm 135:6 states, “Whatever the Lord pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps” (ESV). Our God is a sovereign God, who is always aware of every thought and action of every human being. He is never surprised or shocked by our behavior.
This is not the first time that humanity has called good evil and evil good. Genesis 6:5 communicates, “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (ESV). That was the reason God destroyed all humanity in the Flood, sparing only Noah, his three sons, and their wives on the ark. God had a plan then, and He has a plan now.
Noah focused on laboring until he was weary by being obedient to God’s commands to build the ark. Like Noah, we have two choices. We can ignore God’s commands, or we can choose to obey and keep our eyes on God and the task He has given us. Like Noah, we should choose obedience. Jesus commands us in Matthew 28:19 to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (ESV). We can do that fearlessly, knowing that He is with us wherever we go (see Josh. 1:9).
The Lord does not send us on this task unequipped. Let us put on the full armor of God through our spiritual disciplines so we are ready every minute of every day for the spiritual battle all around us. We must be on our guard, careful not to conform to this world but and instead allow the Word of God to transform us (Rom. 12:2). Are you staying in God’s Word and living out His commands in your daily thoughts, words, and actions?
